Health Start-up: A journaling & mood tracking app helping users build a grateful mindset.

The digital health market is booming, with consumers investing in products to enhance well-being in health, fitness, nutrition, appearance, and sleep.

I was tasked to conceptualise a wellness app and design its MVP dedicated to emerge as a health startup. The challenge resulted in a journaling and mood tracking app with a simple and fresh layout that users can navigate with ease. In continuation, I partnered with a company to bring it to fruition, introducing it to the app store.

"I really want to improve my mental health because this work-life balance is stressing me out. And honestly, I just can't seem to stick to any stress-relief techniques, no matter how hard I try."

- a busy career-oriented professional, Sept 2023

User Research

The research phase included:

  • Secondary research to get on overview of possible problems.

  • Competitive analysis of 4 health app key players: Headspace, Happify, Open, and Medito, to gain market insight and define our unique value proposition.

  • Analysis of 50 survey responses.

Key findings:

98%

experienced stress recently

79%

struggle to maintain stress relief habits

52%

practice gratitude without apps

12%

use wellness apps daily

most

wellness apps contain a lot of features

most

wellness apps focus on meditation

These insights led us to prioritize catering to a niche market to practice gratitude beyond the usual meditation apps with lots of features.

Ideation

The ideation phase consisted of:

  • Crazy 8s method to generate a diverse range of website feature ideas.

  • MoSCoW Method to prioritize these features, chosen by dot voting for speed and suitability for the project.

  • Evaluation of the chosen features aiganst our research insights and project goals.

MVP

These were the winning must have features for the MVP:

Journal prompts

to practice gratitude

Mood tracker

to manage and track stress

Onboarding

to personalize your profile and goals

Daily reminders

to cultivate the habit of journaling

Progress tracker

to stay motivated to use the app

Badges to unlock

to stay motivated to use the app

After finalizing the must-have features, we developed a User Flow to provide an overview of our solution.

We created wireframes for 13 screens, focusing on an intuitive flow throughout the onboarding process and within the main app. We started with Crazy 8s to sketch some low-fidelity ideas. By dot voting, we merged them into a mid-fidelity prototype, which we tested by conducting 3 interviews. I iterated the wireframes to a high-fidelity product by establishing brand attributes and, based on that, creating a moodboard.

Key iterations:

  • Choose a home screen.

  • Make it clear for the users if and where they have to click.

  • Make it clear for the users if a screen is scrollable.

  • Remove unnecessary onboarding questions for which the app doesn't provide a solution.

Conclusion

The insights from our quantitative research and the feedback gathered through user/usability testing greatly contributed to the creation of Bloom.

100%

Found the app intuitive to use

Indicating a low frustration rate.

75%

Would recommend the app

Psychologists, in particular, would recommend using this app to help their clients track their moods.

Key lessons:

  • I underestimated the challenge of finding survey participants in a short time, resulting in fewer responses than we had hoped for. In the future, I will better assess the possibilities beforehand.

  • Improved communication and understanding within the team dramatically enhanced problem-solving speed.

  • I learned that refined prototyping skills, including appropriate interactions, make all the difference in making a prototype look and feel real.

  • I learned the importance of using font sizes of at least 16px on mobile devices for better readability.

Next, the app will be tested with 5-10 users for 7-14 days. Simultaneously, monetization strategies will be explored to ensure sustained profitability. This will refine the app process and pave the way for a successful market launch.
